Working together to make OUR roads safer

Warning:
The following harrowing pictures have been taken in the last four years, most in the last year, half during 2005!
All have been taken within two minutes drive of the school.

The main road through Upwood village is currently subject to a 40mph speed limit that is rarely enforced by the Police. This road exits the village past the front of the primary school where vehicles are driven at speeds of up to 60mph. The same road has a pedestrian pavement along the majority of it which is used daily by parents walking their children to and from school.

The road between Upwood and the next village of Bury currently has the national 60mph speed limit. This stretch of the road lies on a hill with twisting turns and reduced visibility.

U.R.S.G. has called upon the County Council to implement reduced speed limits in both these areas, with appropriate non-invasive traffic calming measures and police enforcement to back them up. The requests we have made are along the lines of what have or are being installed in virtually every other village in the surrounding area.

After an initial negative response from the council suggesting that the area had been reviewed and that “No further action.” was to be taken by the County Council, U.R.S.G. organised a petition which was sent to every house in the Parish.

After a very positive response to the petition, the U.R.S.G. presented it and an evaluative report to the Area Joint Traffic Committee of the County Council and Hunts D.C. Since then, a number of minor improvements to road signage and marking have been implemented or agreed for future implementation.
